The A34 Lodge Hill scheme, which is being delivered by Oxfordshire County Council, includes constructing new south-facing slip roads onto the A34 at Lodge Hill and layby upgrades on the A34 southbound at Harwell.
These latest traffic management arrangements will impact the A34.
The A34 southbound carriageway between the Hinksey Hill junction and the Marcham Interchange will be closed overnight (between 9pm and 6am) on the following nights:
Monday 21 September
Tuesday 22 September
Wednesday 23 September
Thursday 24 September
Friday 25 September
Monday 28 September
Tuesday 29 September
Wednesday 30 September
Thursday 1 October
Friday 2 October
This overnight work is to facilitate removal and replacement of the bridge parapet on the western side of the A4183 overbridge and surfacing works to the A34 southbound, as well tie in works for the new on slip.
A signed diversion route will be in place via the A4183 and through Abingdon.
In addition, in order to construct the Harwell layby and tie it into the A34, we will need to close a further section of the A34 southbound, between the Milton and Chilton interchanges. This will take place over the weekend of 2 – 5 October 2026. For the safety of both our workforce and the traveling public, we will need to have traffic management in place as our work progresses.
During the night time (9pm – 6am on 2 – 5 October), between the Milton and Chilton interchanges, the A34 southbound will be fully closed to traffic. A diversion route will be in place via the A4130 between Milton and Chilton. Vehicles wishing to travel south will need to leave the A34 at Milton, follow the A4130 towards Steventon and Harwell and then rejoin the A34 southbound at Chilton. Advance warning signs will be in place, along with clear diversion signs.
There will also be minor changes to lane markings and signage at the Milton interchange to help with traffic flows.
During the daytime (Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, 6am – 9pm), only the left lane (lane 1) of the A34 southbound will be closed. The right lane (lane 2) will remain open to traffic and speeds will be reduced to 50mph.
While we are working hard to keep any disruption to a minimum, delays are expected. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any disruption caused.
Additional signage will also be placed on the M4, A404 and M40, advising motorists of the closure and suggesting alternate routes to further reduce traffic volumes.
Kind regards
