Proposed traffic measures for Bagley Wood Road, Kennington

Kennington Parish Council is seeking your views on how to improve safety on Bagley Wood Road.

Over recent years, residents and road users have raised increasing concerns about traffic using this route. These include higher traffic volumes, vehicle speeds, and the challenges created by the road’s narrow layout.  At the same time, Bagley Wood Road is well used by pedestrians and cyclists, making safety a key priority for the community.

To address these concerns, and after an initial on-site consultation with Oxfordshire County Council Highways Officers, two potential options are being considered:

Option 1: One-Way Traffic

This would make the road one-way (either northbound or southbound), with a short section remaining two-way near the Head Injury Clinic. This option aims to simplify traffic flow, reduce the chance of vehicles getting stuck, and lower traffic levels at busy times. It would be relatively low-cost but may lead to some drivers travelling faster.

Option 2: Filtered Traffic

This would restrict through-traffic, allowing mainly local access only. It would significantly reduce traffic volumes and speeds, creating a much safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and especially children walking to school. This option would involve more physical changes to the road.

Both of these options will require further discussion and will also depend on securing the required funding for the changes. We would be working closely with Oxfordshire County Council’s Highways Team and our local County Councillor Diana Lugova throughout the process.

To gauge residents’ opinions on this, the Parish Council has created an online survey (although you may prefer to email your views to the Clerk to the Parish Council – ).
